There is an increasing consciousness about the merits of eating what’s in season. Beyond the clear environmental advantages, we’re starting to understand the benefits for our bodies too.
But as we vary our diets with seasonal changes, so should we be changing what we drink! Through winter we might be eating hearty casseroles and stews, meaty pies and creamy pasta dishes; so we should be opening big wines that won’t be overwhelmed by the rich flavours of winter food but will even enhance them further. We should be drinking Shiraz, Merlot, Pinotage and perhaps a Chardonnay (unwooded of course). A curry will taste even better with a Sauvignon Blanc. Don’t be shy to treat yourself to a big red blend to make the best of your oxtail with dumplings! |
